Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a loved one. You can tell yourself you can handle anything that comes your way, but grief is a condition that takes hold and often won’t let go for a while. At Counseling Works in Aurora, our therapists are sensitive to your loss and will provide you with effective grief counseling that will comfort you.

The grieving process will take you through a river of emotions, not just sadness. You will feel sadness, but you will also feel anger, guilt, yearning, and resentment. For many people, these are feelings that are not exhibited much in everyday life, but when you lose someone you love forever, the internal misery often lasts much longer than expected.

The Five Stages of Grief

Nearly 50 years ago Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross defined the five stages of grief, which is still widely used by therapists today. Indeed, everyone is unique and grieves in their way, and Kubler-Ross’s five stages serve as a framework, not a specific step-by-step grieving guide. The steps usually happen out of order and bounce back and forth.

  • Denial. Denial is present when it is impossible to accept the news, and the world seems like a bizarre place.
  • Anger. Once you understand what has happened, often feelings of violence will become overwhelming and underneath the anger is the pain you feel from the loss.
  • Bargaining. Sometimes bargaining seems like a good idea. The “if only” scenarios go round and round in your head, and sometimes you feel guilt during this stage.
  • Depression. Most everyone will feel depression after the loss of a loved one, or after you hear the news that a loved one’s condition is terminal. Depressed feelings and negative emotions are natural responses to the bad news.
  • Acceptance. Acceptance is what happens when you acknowledge your loved one is physically gone and roles may need to change. Most likely you never accept the death of a loved one, but you find ways to live again.
